When to visit Kerala: a season-by-season guide

October to March is Kerala’s most comfortable season. Days on the coast are warm and dry, the hills around Munnar are cool and clear, and houseboats run at their best. It is also the busiest time, especially from mid-December to early January, so book stays early.

April and May are hot and humid along the coast and backwaters. The hills stay pleasant, which makes this a good window for a Munnar- and Thekkady-focused trip, with fewer crowds and easier availability.

The south-west monsoon usually arrives in early June and lasts until September. Rain can be heavy, but the landscape is at its greenest and Ayurveda centres consider it an ideal season for treatments. Expect some road delays in the hills and occasional changes to boat schedules.

Festivals add colour: Onam (usually August or September) brings snake-boat races and harvest celebrations, while Thrissur Pooram (April or May) is one of the state’s grandest temple festivals.

Ladakh for first-timers: acclimatisation and routes

Leh sits at roughly 3,500 metres, so the first 36–48 hours matter more than anything else on the trip. Plan a slow arrival day, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and keep the first outing to a short walk around Leh.

Most first itineraries combine Leh’s monasteries with Nubra Valley over Khardung La and a night or two near Pangong Lake. Each of these involves long drives and high passes, so build in rest between them rather than chaining them back to back.

The usual season runs from about May to September, when the high passes are generally open. Some areas require an Inner Line Permit for Indian travellers and a Protected Area Permit for foreign nationals — these can be arranged as part of your plan.

Pack layers rather than one heavy jacket: mornings and evenings are cold even in summer, while afternoons can be bright and dry. Sunscreen and sunglasses are essential at altitude.

Planning a first trip to Bali from India

For a first visit of six or seven nights, splitting your stay between two bases works well: Ubud for rice terraces, temples and culture, then the south — Seminyak, Jimbaran or Uluwatu — for beaches and sunsets.

Distances look short on a map but traffic can be slow, so plan one main outing per day rather than several. A private driver for the day is the easiest way to explore.

Indian passport holders should check the current visa rules before travel, as entry requirements for Indonesia can change. Keep at least six months’ validity on your passport.

April to October is generally the drier season. Popular villas and day trips fill quickly around Indian school holidays and Diwali, so these are worth booking early.

A simple checklist for family holidays abroad

Start with documents: check every passport’s expiry date (many countries need six months’ validity), apply for visas early, and keep digital and paper copies of passports, visas, tickets and hotel confirmations.

Choose flights that suit the children’s routine where possible, and allow a lighter first day after arrival. One or two planned activities per day, with free time in between, usually works better than a packed schedule.

Pack a small day bag with medicines, snacks, a change of clothes and chargers. Travel insurance that covers medical care for every family member is strongly recommended.

Family rooms, connecting rooms or apartments make a big difference on longer trips — tell us your group size and we will look for stays that fit everyone comfortably.
